API commands

Please find in the following a set of the most commonly used standard API commands in order to register, modify, renew, and transfer a domain name.

Domain Registration

(API Command reference » AddDomain)
command         = AddDomain
domain          = yourdomain.jp
period          = (INT)
ownercontact0   = (CONTACT)
admincontact0   = (CONTACT)
techcontact0    = (CONTACT)
billingcontact0 = (CONTACT)
nameserver0	= (NAMESERVER)
nameserver1 	= (NAMESERVER)

O-Handles are not allowed. First and last name required.

Domain Modification

(API Command reference » ModifyDomain)
command = ModifyDomain
domain  = yourdomain.jp

Domain Renewal

RenewDomain is not available for .jp TLDs.

.jp domains cannot be renewed explicitly. To renew a .jp domain you have to set the domain renewal mode or default renewal mode to AUTORENEW or RENEWONCE.

Domain Deletion

(API Command reference » DeleteDomain)
COMMAND = DeleteDomain
DOMAIN = yourdomain.jp

Domain Transfer

(API Command reference » TransferDomain)
command = TransferDomain
domain  = yourdomain.jp
action  = REQUEST
auth    = (TEXT)
ownercontact0   = (CONTACT)
  • Transfers are NOT possible, if the domain is expiring within the next 30 days.
  • A .jp domain transfer must be initiated with a valid auth code.
  • The current owner contact information is required, a change of registrant is NOT possible during the transfer.
  • After a successful transfer, a 60 day transfer lock will be set from the Registry.

command = TransferDomain
domain  = yourdomain.jp
action  = approve

Once a transfer has been initiated from the gaining registrar, you will have to approve the transfer manually with the above command.

If the owner contact does not have a Japanes address, you need to set a new owner contact with a Japanese address or otherwise it is not possible to transfer away. This is required due to the usage of a proxy address for non Japanese registrants(see "Restrictions"), which has to be updated with an own one prior to the TransferOUT.

Domain Restore

(API Command reference » RestoreDomain)
command = RestoreDomain
domain  = yourdomain.jp

The restore request will be manually processed by our support team. You will be notified by email.

Domain Extensions

Provide the P-Handle that contains the UTF-8 characters, which should correspond to the content of the owner contact used to register the domain. The email address still needs to be ASCII.
The provision of this contact is only possible for .JP IDNs.

Domain Restrictions

  • A local address in Japan is provided automatically, if the owner contact does not contain a local Japanese address.
  • O-Handles are not allowed. First and last name required.
  • If you are using JP as country code in one of the contact handles (owner, admin, tech or billing contact), the field "state" becomes mandatory and has to contain the 2digit JISX040 (ISO 3166-2:JP) prefecture code.
  • In case a Japanese address is used, the correct japanese zip code format (XXX-XXXX) has to be used.
  • The city needs to match the zip-code. Including the prefecture name in the street address is optional.
  • A specific phone number format also has to be used in case of a Japanese address. The correct format is 4912345678 instead of 004912345678 or +4912345678 for example.
  • The telephone number for a Japanese contact needs to be a valid Japanese phone number. Japanese phone numbers typically begin with specific prefixes for home/office phone numbers or with 070/080 for mobile numbers. Some prefix examples being the following:
    Tokyo -> 03
    Osaka -> 06
    Kyoto -> 075

IDN Information

IDNs only available in the following character sets:

  • Kanji
  • Hiragana
  • Katakana

A General-use JP domain name containing Kanji, Hiragana, and/or Katakana must consist of one to fifteen (1~15) characters, excluding ".JP" suffix. The number of characters in an ASCII JP domain name must be from three to sixty-three (3~63).
Please note that if ASCII, Kanji, Hiragana and/or Katakana characters coexist in a same label of a General-use JP domain name, each character will be counted as one, whether or not it is of double byte code or single byte code.
